Session Set for Wednesday, April 18 at 4 p.m. at the Gateway Building
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) will host a community open house on Wednesday, April 18, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. to discuss the traffic impacts of the bridge deck rehabilitation project on the Buffalo Skyway in the city of Buffalo, Erie County.

The open house will be held at the Gateway Building, located at 3556 Lakeshore Boulevard in the village of Blasdell in Erie County. The meeting will be an open forum format, whereby individuals can arrive at any time from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. to discuss the proposed traffic impacts of the project, the tentative schedule and duration of anticipated roadway closures and information on traffic detours. Department of Transportation representatives will be available to answer individual questions.

The Buffalo Skyway, which is approximately one mile in length with an elevation of 110 feet, carries State Route 5 over the Buffalo River and is used by more than 40,000 vehicles per day. The Skyway provides a connection from the southtowns and Outer Harbor area to downtown Buffalo, the international border and the interstate highway system.

The $29.8 million maintenance project will rehabilitate the concrete deck, including replacement of bridge joints, and perform minor steel repairs to ensure the continued safety of the Buffalo Skyway.

The traffic control plan was designed to cause minimum disruption to traffic during construction. The project will be built using phased construction in order to keep a portion of the Skyway open to traffic throughout the duration of the project. Peak traffic in the inbound and outbound directions will be accommodated on the open portion of the Skyway by using cross-overs and alternating the direction of traffic. Detours will be established for inbound and outbound traffic and for traffic diverted by closure of ramps.

The project was awarded in March 2018 to Cold Spring Construction Company of Akron in Erie County. Construction will begin in April 2018 and contract completion is scheduled in summer 2020.
