An estimated $17.58 million in property damage is lost due to Christmas trees fires each year. An addition $20 million is lost from Holiday candles. While holiday decorations are beautiful to look at, they can be dangerous as well.

SERVPRO of The Southtowns recommends these Holiday safety tips to keep you and your family safe during this Holiday season:

Make sure to water your tree! A dry tree will ignite more quickly.

Unplug lights and decorations before going to bed or leaving the home.

Double-check that candles and space heaters are at LEAST 3 feet away from the tree or other decorations.

Analyze light strings and decorations and be certain they are in good condition. Never use lights that have a frayed electrical cords and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Always extinguish candles before leaving room and going to bed.

Use sturdy tree stands designed not to tip over. Keep curious children and pets away from Christmas trees.

Keep anything that can catch on fire (ex, pot holders, over mitts, paper or plastic bags, towels or food packaging) away from your stove top.
