The Town of Hamburg Department of Youth, Recreation and Senior Services is accepting registration for its Start Smart Multisport motor skills development program for children ages 3 to 5 that will begin in September and run through October at the Big Tree Elementary School on Bayview Road. Created by the National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS), Start Smart programs introduce young children to a particular sport in a safe and fun environment with a parent participating to encourage and support the child as he or she becomes acclimated to the sport. The NAYS website, www.NAYS.org states that Start Smart programs help kids to get ready for sports and succeed in life. It is described as an “innovative step-by-step approach that builds confidence and self-esteem in a fun and safe sports environment.”

The Start Smart Multisport program will be held in the school gymnasium from 6 to 7 p.m. with options for sessions on Mondays from Sept. 18 through Oct. 30 or Thursdays from Sept. 21 through Oct. 26. Sports included are baseball, basketball, football, soccer and tennis.

A $55 fee per child for town residents ($65 for non-residents) includes age-appropriate equipment for each child along with a T-shirt and participant manual. Equipment for Multisport is furnished by Town Recreation. Participants may register in person at the Recreation Office, online at www.hamburg-youth-rec-seniors.com, or call the Recreation Office at 646-5145. Start Smart programs are limited to a maximum of 20 children and require an adult to participate with the child at each class.
